The Million Dollar A Year Test

Imagine for a second that a wealthy relative has died and has left you an income of one million dollars a year for the rest of your life. After dancing round the room, take a moment to reflect on these questions:

  1. What would you change?
  2. What would you do more of?
  3. What would you do less of?
  4. What would you cut out completely?
  5. What would you start doing that you are not doing now?

Avoid the temptation to think about what you would buy. Focus on what you would or wouldn't do. How would your days actually change?

I did this exercise recently and was surprised and pleased how little my life would change. I would work a bit less (I love my work so would not want to give up entirely). I would study a bit more (the cost and time of studying is always a challenge for me). I would travel a bit more and probably in nicer hotels!

Other than that, the money would change nothing. I would continue doing pretty much the things I am doing now.

What about you? The million dollar test is a great way to see how out of sync or in-sync your current lifestyle is from your ideal life. The smaller the number of changes you would make, the more in-sync your life is.

Your small improvement for today is to take the million dollar test!
